3rd January 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
Late in the day three Team members came across several
poorly equipped walkers who were in difficulty attempting to descend
the top of the Devil's Ladder in icy conditions. They were subsequently
roped down to safer ground (note: this was one of a number of
similar incidents dealt with by Team members over the holiday
period).
6th January 2010. Kilcummin. Alert.
Killarney Gardaí requested that the Team come
to the assistance of a motorist who's vehicle had left the road
in icy conditions. Prior to mobilisation of the Team word was
received that assistance was no longer required.
9th January 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
Gardaí contacted the Team after four climbers
from two separate parties reported themselves in difficulty at
the top of the Devil's Ladder in icy conditions. Neither party
had ice axes or crampons and had apparently walked past notices
advising climbers of the essential nature of this equipment in
the prevailing conditions. One of the climbers had luckily avoided
injury on a long slide on the descent from the summit. The Team
climbed to the location in darkness and roped the climbers to
safety.
10th January 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
Killarney Gardaí were contacted by a concerned
relative at approximately 19.00 after a family member, who was
attending an outdoor course, had failed to make contact as arranged.
The Team contacted the course provider and established that all
was well.
21st February 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
The Team were contacted at 18.30 after Gardaí
received a report that shouts for help had been heard in the Heavenly
Gates area. A number of Team members were dispatched to investigate
but heard no further shouts and established that there were no
cars unaccounted for. The alert was stood down at 21.00.
4th March 2010. Hag's Glen. Assistance.
A report was received that a walker on Corrán
Tuathail had suffered an ankle injury and was unable to continue.
On making phone contact with the casualty it was established that
he was at Ard na Locha. A small contingent of Team members made
their way to the location and the casualty was evacuated from
the Hag's Glen by Landrover.
24th March. Glenbeigh. Alert.
Gardaí requested the assistance of the Team
at 19.30 following several reports of a flare sighted in the mountains
near Glenbeigh. The Team conducted a search of the area but found
nothing unusual and the callout was stood down at 23.30.
3rd April 2010. Stricin. Rescue.
The Team were alerted at 12.40 after a walker had sustained
a lower leg injury on Stricin mountain. The injury was treated
and the casualty was stretchered from the hill and handed over
to an awaiting ambulance at approximately 15.00.
2nd May 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
Gardaí alerted the Team after a group of walkers
who had ascended the Devil's Ladder were unable to descend by
the same route. The group were contacted, and as there were other
experienced walkers in the area they were advised to meet up with
them and descend via the Cnoc na Toinne zig-zags. The Team maintained
regular contact until it was established that the group were safely
down to the valley floor.
13th May 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
A solo walker contacted Gardaí after he became
unsure of his position in poor visiblility. The Team made phone
contact with the man and from the description given it became
apparent that the walker was in the Curraghmore area. He was subsequently
directed towards Derrynafeanna, from where he was able to return
to his car at the Hydro road.
16th May 2010. Hags Glen. Rescue.
Whilst on a training exercise in the Gap of Dunloe
the Team was alerted that an elderly walker had sustained an ankle
injury close to Ard na Locha, and was unable to walk any further.
In an operation very similar to the one carried out on 4th March,
a contingent of Team members was dispatched to the area and treated
the injury before evacuating the man to the road head in the Team's
Landrover off-road ambulance.
17th May 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
The Team were alerted at approximately 22.00 after
two men became cragfast and benighted below the Beenkeeragh Ridge.
A full callout was launched and the first Team members arrived
on the scene shortly after midnight. One of the men, who was very
cold and quite shaken, was given food and warm clothing before
the pair were roped from the mountain, arriving down at approximately
04.00.
29th May 2010. Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report
that a walker had become separated from his group. The person
turned up safe and well prior to a full response being launched.
12th June 2010. Brandon. Referral.
The Team were notified after a competitor in an adventure
race became unwell in the Faha Ridge area. Due to the relatively
low elevation of the incident the call was referred to the Dingle
Coast Guard Team, however the man subsequently recovered sufficiently
to walk down to the road without outside assistance.
22nd June 2010. Cnoc na Toinne. Rescue.
A contingent of Team members came to the assistance
of a walker who was experiencing difficulties descending the zig-zags
after spending the night on Corrán Tuathail. The person was evacuated
from Ard na Locha by Landrover.
1st July 2010. Caherdaniel. Rescue.
The Team were alerted following a report of a female
walker who had sustained an ankle injury on the Eagles Hill (windy
gap) section of the Kerry Way. The Team treated the injury before
stretchering the casualty to the road and transferring her to
an ambulance at Waterville.
26th July 2010. Peakeen. Rescue.
The Team were contacted by Tralee Ambulance Control
following a report of a walker who has sustained a fractured femur
during a fall on Peakeen. The Team joined the Kenmare Fire Service
at the scene and provided first aid and immobilisation for the
casualty before he was airlifted to Kerry General Hospital by
the Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter.
30th July 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
Gardaí contacted the Team after they received
a report of a female with a suspected fractured ankle on Corrán
Tuathail. The Team made phone contact with the party, who had
been descending through mist and were unsure of their position.
During a brief clearance they were instructed to take a photograph
of the view with a mobile phone and send it as an MMS message
to the Team co-ordinator, and as a result of this it was established
that they were in the Curraghmore area. The Team made their way
to the scene, and also alerted the Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter.
The helicopter crew were unable to winch directly from the casualty
location due to mist, however the Team stretcher-lowered the casualty
to a point below mist level, from where she was successfully winched
into the helicopter and evacuated to hospital in Tralee. The Team
escorted the remaining three party members from their exposed
location to safer ground.
31st July 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
A report was received that a walker was suffering from
suspected cardiac chest pain above the Devil's Ladder. He was
located and treated by the Team before being stretcher-lowered
down the Devil's Ladder to a point from which he could be winched
to the Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter, who completed the evacuation
to Kerry General Hospital.
2nd August 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
At approx. 20.00 a family group of 5 contacted Gardaí
and reported themselves in difficulty and suffering from exhaustion
high on the mountain. A contingent of Team members located the
party, gave them high-energy food and drink and brought them safely
down, arriving at the valley floor before midnight.
4th August 2010. Mount Eagle. Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team following reports
of flares being sighted in the Mount Eagle area. The Team contacted
the Coast Guard Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Valentia,
and established that they had also received reports of flares
in the area, but at a much lower elevation. The alert was subsequently
stood down.
15th August 2010. Brandon. Alert/Referral.
The Team were contacted by Gardaí following
a report of a walker with a broken ankle on the Cosan na Naomh
path on the western side of Brandon. The Team passed on details
of the call to Dingle Coast Guard Rescue Team, who also initiated
a response. KMRT were stood down after the walker was airlifted
to hospital by the Shannon Coast Guard Rescue helicopter and the
casualty's partner was subsequently escorted from the mountain
by Dingle CGRT.
16th August 2010. Hungry Hill. Rescue.
KMRT and Castletownbere Coast Guard Rescue Team were
both alerted after a father and son became disorientated and cragfast
on steep ground on Hungry Hill. Castletownbere CGRT subsequently
located the pair and were escorting them from the mountain when
the Team arrived on scene.
20th August 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
Concern was expressed to the Team after a car had apparently
been left overnight at a starting point for the mountain. It was
subsequently established that the owner had finished late in the
evening and had then returned early the following morning to repeat
the same walk!
5th September 2010. Coomaglaslaw. Rescue.
The Team were alerted after a member of a walking party
suffered a substantial fall from the back wall of Coomaglaslaw,
sustaining back, head and chest injuries. Team members quickly
made their way to the scene whilst the Irish Coast Guard Helicopter
from Shannon was alerted. The man was subsequently treated for
his injuries and lowered from the mountain in atrocious conditions
before being winched into the Coast Guard Helicopter to complete
the evacuation to hospital.
13th September 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report
of a solo walker who was unsure of his descent route from the
mountain after his map had blown away in high winds. He was contacted
by mobile phone and given GPS co-ordinates for the Devil's Ladder,
while a small contingent of Team members made their way to the
scene to ensure that the man made it down safely.
25th September 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
The Team were alerted in the early afternoon after
a party came across a walker who was in a disorientated state
following a fall in the second level area, during which he had
sustained a head injury. Team members who happened to be in the
vicinity made their way to the scene whilst the rest of the Team
mobilised, and also alerted the Irish Coast Guard Helicopter.
The person was subsequently treated and assisted at the scene
by Team members and members of the party who had initially found
him before being airlifted to hospital. The remainder of the Team
(who had arrived at Ard na Locha) were then stood down.
25th September 2010. Mangerton. Alert.
Killarney Gardaí contacted the Team at 23.00
following a report from a member of the public that there was
a light high on Mangerton. On investigation it transpired that
the light in question was in fact the light on a new transmitting
mast on Mullaghanish, and the alert was stood down. False alarm
with good intent.
30th September 2010. Coomnadiha. Rescue.
The Team were contacted after two female walkers became
unsure of their descent from the trig point on Coomnadiha. In
a joint operation with Castletownbere Coast Guard Team, the Team
made their way to the pair and escorted them from the mountain.
1st October 2010. Torc. Rescue.
The Team were alerted after a group of four people
became stranded in heavy undergrowth on Torc Mountain in fading
light. They used their mobile phone to provide the Team with a
grid reference, and were subsequently located and walked from
the mountain in darkness.
3rd October 2010. Bridia Valley. Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team at approximately 22.00 after
concern was expressed about a solo German walker who had failed
to arrive at a guesthouse in the Bridia valley following an intended
walk from Lord Brandon’s Cottage via Corrán Tuathail. As
the Team was conducting enquiries the man turned up at the guesthouse
having abandoned his planned route due to a minor knee injury.
10th October 2010. Cummeengeera Pocket. Alert.
The Team were placed on standby after a female walker
broke her ankle on the ridge just below Eskatarriff. The Team
were subsequently stood down after it was confirmed that the casualty
had been successfully airlifted by the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter.
10th October 2010. Mangerton. Assistance.
A call was received from Killarney Gardaí after three walkers
became disorientated on Mangerton in thick mist. Contact was made with the
group and from the description given by them it was established that they
were in the Horse’s Glen area. They were given instructions and a bearing
that brought them safely back to their starting point, and the Team were
stood down.
24th October 2010. Hag's Tooth. Rescue.
The Team was contacted after a rock climber took a
substantial fall from the Hag's Tooth, sustaining a serious lower
leg injury. The Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard Helicopter was
alerted, and arrived on-scene shortly before the first Team members,
who then assisted the winchman with first aid and casualty packaging.
The casualty was subsequently lowered a short distance to a suitable
winching area prior to being airlifted to hospital in Tralee,
where he later underwent surgery.
15th November 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
A member of the public contacted the Team to report
that a light was seen on Corrán Tuathail before dawn. The Team
made some enquiries, and as no one was reported missing it was
decided that no further action was required.
20th November 2010. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
Gardaí were contacted by a hillwalker who
offered his assistance to pinpoint a location on the ground
after he witnessed the Irish Coast Guard helicopter deploying
a smoke flare close to Corrán Tuathail. It was quickly
established that the helicopter was on a training exercise in
the area and the alert was stood down.
5th December 2010. Mangerton. Alert.
The Team were contacted by Killarney Gardaí
following a report that two men were overdue from their climb
of Mangerton. An advance party were mobilised and on arriving
at the foot of the mountain the two men were observed descending
safely.
23rd December 2010. Sliabh Mish. Assistance.
The Team were contacted after a local man became exhausted
in sub-zero temperatures between Caherconree and Baurtregaum.
The Team launched a response and also requested assistance from
the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter. The man was subsequently airlifted
to safety.
29th December 2010. Coomasaharn. Alert.
Gardaí alerted the Team after a flare was sighted
in the Coomasaharn area. As the incident was similar to a suspected
hoax call on 24th March, and nobody was reported overdue, it was
decided to refer the matter to Valentia Coast Guard.
7th January 2011. Killarney Area. Assistance.
The Team responded to a request from Gardaí
to provide transport assistance in dealing with minor traffic
collisions in the County Bounds and Barraduff areas following
the sudden onset of severe winter weather conditions.
15th January 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Alert.
The Team were alerted after a relative became concerned
about the wellbeing of a small party of walkers who were failing
to respond to mobile phone calls, having set off to climb Corrán
Tuathail in poor weather. As it was still very early in the day
the Team decided to monitor the situation, and shortly afterwards
the party returned to their car having abandoned the climb.
30th January 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Alert.
A concerned local man contacted the Team at 21.30 when
he noticed that the car of a solo walker, who had set off to climb
Corrán Tuathail earlier in the day, was still in the Lisleibane
car park (the walker had earlier stated that he planned to be
back down to his car by 17.00 at the latest). As the Team prepared
to mobilise the man turned up safe and well.
13th February 2011. Maghanaboe. Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report that two
poorly equipped walkers had become separated from their group in the
Maghanaboe area in deteriorating weather conditions. As the Team were
preparing a response the walkers turned up safe and well.
20th March 2011. Glanteenassig. Alert.
Tralee Gardaí contacted the Team following a
report that a man walking in the Glanteenassig area had become
separated from his friend who he believed had taken a fall and
may be suffering from concussion. As the Team were preparing to
mobilise a subsequent call was received to say the pair had been
reunited and that all was well.
16th April 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report
from a walker that an unattended rucksack complete with climbing
gear and mobile phone had been located at the summit of Corrán
Tuathail. A Team member who was in the vicinity was able to establish
that the owner was climbing a route on the mountain and had intentionally
left the rucksack on the summit.
16th April 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Assistance.
A call was received from a group on a charity climb of
Carrauntoohil saying that one of their party had developed severe blisters
and was making very slow progress on the descent. A Team landrover was
dispatched to Ard na Locha to assist with the final part of the evacuation.
16th April 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Assistance.
A group leader contacted Gardaí after he witnessed
two people in another party take tumbles on the path leading down
from the first level. Team members dealing with the previous incident
were diverted to this one and found the party moving slowly with
the two bruised and shaken casualties. They were evacuated to
Cronin’s Yard from where they made arrangements to receive medical
attention. In the meantime a second Team landrover was dispatched
to pick up the casualty from the previous incident.
24th April 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Rescue.
Gardaí contacted the Team after a father and son had
reported themselves cragfast approximately 20 metres below the
crest of the Bin Chaorach Ridge, on its western side. A Team member
who was climbing a route on Corrán Tuathail was tasked to the
scene and succeeded in belaying the pair to safer ground before
accompanying them off the mountain.
29th April 2011. Brandon. Assistance.
Gardaí contacted the Team after a farmer sustained
lower leg injuries while working on steep ground in the Sás Creek
area. A full callout was initiated and assistance from the Shannon
Coast Guard helicopter was requested, however they were on another
mission at the time. Shortly after the first Team members arrived
at the scene the helicopter succesfully airlifted the casualty
to Kerry General Hospital, having completed their earlier mission.
14th May 2011. Binn Chaorach.
Rescue.
The Team were contacted by Gardaí following a report that
a man had sustained a fall high on the Hag’s Tooth Ridge. The casualty
had been assisted by his companions to a point a little lower down,
however they became concerned when he became confused and disorientated.
A full callout was launched and assistance was requested from the
Shannon Coast Guard helicopter. Team members arrived on scene shortly
before the arrival of the helicopter, however winching was not possible
due to extremely turbulent wind conditions at the scene. The Team
subsequently lowered the casualty by stretcher to Ard na Locha, from
where he was airlifted to Kerry General Hospital.
1st June 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Rescue.
Killarney Gardaí alerted the Team after a walker became
cragfast below the ‘Hag’s Tooth’. A small contingent of Team members
located the man and escorted him from the mountain. His rucksack was
also located and recovered from the shore of Lough Gouragh.
2nd June 2011. Screig Mhór.
Assistance.
The Team were contacted after a French walker sustained
a severe laceration and possible fracture to the lower leg close
to Screig Mhór. The Shannon Coast Guard helicopter was requested
to assist, and succeeded in airlifting the casualty to hospital
shortly before the first Team members arrived at the scene.
5th June 2011. Mangerton.
Assistance.
A call was received from Tralee Gardaí after two walkers became
disorientated in thick mist near the summit of Mangerton. Mobile phone
contact was established with the pair and they were given directions back
to the path, from where they were able to descend without further assistance.
5th June 2011. Corrán Tuathail.
Rescue.
The Team were alerted after a female walker suffered a
fall on one of the rocky steps leading to the ‘first level’, sustaining
head and arm injuries. Team members made their way to the scene and
administered first aid while the Waterford Coast Guard Helicopter was
en route (the Shannon Heli was unavailable). The casualty was subsequently
stretcher-lowered to a more suitable winching location close to the
lakeshore before being airlifted to hospital in Cork.
2nd July 2011. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
A report was received via the Gardaí that a
female walker had taken a fall on the upper part of the Devil’s
Ladder sustaining a head injury and some bruising. The Team contacted
the informant who advised that he was assisting the casualty down
the mountain. A Team Landrover was dispatched to Ard na Locha
to complete the evacuation.
2nd July 2011. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
The Team were alerted when two walkers became cragfast
after wandering from the path on their descent from the first level.
Team members were able to abseil to their location before lowering
them with ropes to a safe area from where they could walk off the mountain.
14th July 2011. Bonane. Fatality.
The Team were contacted at 01.30 after a local farmer
who had been checking on sheep had failed to return from the mountain.
Shortly afterwards word came through that local people, who had also
been searching, had located the man’s body. The Team made their way
to the scene and removed the remains to the roadside.
16th July 2011. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
It was brought to the attention of the Team that a
participant in a charity walk was suffering from a knee injury.
She was subsequently transported from Ard na Locha.
24th July 2011. Coimín na Peasta. Rescue.
The Team was alerted at 16.30 after a member of a walking
group had sustained an ankle injury on the Coimín na Peasta
ridge and was unable to continue. The injury was treated and the
casualty was subsequently evacuated to the Black Valley in a long
and challenging stretcher lower on difficult ground and in thick
mist and darkness, eventually reaching the road at 01.30.
31st July 2011. Hag's Glen. Assistance.
Assistance was requested to complete the evacuation of a walker with
a painful ankle injury from Ard na Locha. The ankle subsequently turned out to be fractured.
6th August 2011. Hag's Glen. Rescue.
The Team were contacted by Gardaí after a walker injured
her knee on the descent of the Cnoc na Toinne zig-zags. The Shannon
Coast Guard helicopter were requested to assist, and following
a short stretcher lower to a suitable location the casualty was
winched to the helicopter for the journey to Kerry General Hospital.
14th August 2011. Corran Tuathail. Rescue.
The Team were alerted after a 12 year old boy sustained
a knee injury at the ‘first level’. The Team made their way to
the scene and administered first aid to the casualty before stretchering
him a short distance to a point from where he could be winched
to the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter.
14th August 2011. Corran Tuathail. Assistance.
Whilst en-route to the location of the previous callout,
Team members encountered three walkers who were unsure of the
correct descent route after abandoning their climb of the mountain.
They were assisted over a rocky step and shown the correct route
down.
21st August 2011. Hag's Glen. Rescue.
A Team member climbing in the Reeks encountered a charity walker
who was being assisted down the Cnoc na Toinne zig-zags with a medical complaint.
When her condition deteriorated a full callout was initiated and the walker was subsequently
airlifted to hospital by the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter.
28th August 2011. Gap of Dunloe. Rescue.
The Team were contacted after a solo rockclimber suffered
a substantial fall in the vicinity of Póirse Gully, sustaining
multiple injuries. The Team administered first aid to the casualty
before lowering him to a location from where he could be winched
to the Irish Coast Guard helicopter for transit to hospital (The
Waterford helicopter responded, as the Shannon helicopter was
already engaged in another tasking elsewhere).
28th August 2011. Brandon. Assistance.
Whilst the Team were responding to the previous callout
word was received that a lone walker on Brandon had become disorientated
and was unable to locate the correct descent route. His likely
position was established using photographs sent from his mobile
phone, and appropriate directions were given. He contacted the
Team a short time later to say that he was no longer in need of
assistance.
30th August 2011. Hag's Glen. Assistance.
At 21.00 a Team member went to the assistance of an
elderly walker who was suffering from exhaustion following a long
day on the mountain.
17th September 2011. Old Kenmare Road. Rescue.
The Team were alerted by Gardaí after an elderly
walker sustained a hip injury close to the Windy Gap. The assistance
of the Coast Guard Rescue helicopter was requested and the casualty
was subsequently airlifted to hospital.
27th September 2011. McGillycuddy Reeks. Rescue.
The Team received a report that a father and adult son were in difficulty
with the son suffering from exhaustion towards the end of a long walk in the Reeks.
From the description given it was established that they may be close to Cnoc an Bhráca
in the Eastern Reeks. A contingent of Team members made their way to the area and
in heavy fog and gathering darkness the pair were located, given food and drink, and escorted off the hill.
19th November 2011. Castlegregory. Referral.
Gardaí contacted the Team with a request for
urgent assistance after an Alzheimer's patient went missing in
the Castlegregory area. As they were in fact looking for the Coast
Guard helicopter they were referred to Valentia Coast Guard control
centre.
4th December 2011. Hag's Glen. Assistance.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report
of a walker feeling unwell on Corrán Tuathail. Team members
made their way to the Hag's Glen and met the party (who had been
descending from the first level) before completing the evacuation.
The casualty was subsequently taken to Kerry General Hospital
for treatment.
28th December 2011. Corrán Tuathail. Alert.
Gardaí contacted the Team at 18.30 after two
walkers (who were last seen on the Devil's Ladder at 15.30 when
their companion turned back) had failed to return from the mountain.
Neither walker was carrying a phone or a torch. As the Team were
taking details from the informant the pair turned up safe and
well.
7th January 2012. Curraghmore. Rescue.
As the Team were training in the Gap of Dunloe, information
was received that a solo female American walker was in distress
in the Curraghmore area, however details were initially sketchy
as phone contact was intermittent and broken. A search was launched
in conjunction with the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter, which
picked up a Team member to assist in the search. The injured walker
was spotted in an inaccessible gully overlooking Curraghmore,
after having apparently fallen following a navigational error
when returning from Corrán Tuathail towards Caher. Conditions
were initially unsuitable for winching so the helicopter picked
up further Team members to airlift them closer to the casualty
location. On returning to the scene the conditions had improved
however and the casualty was winched onto the aircraft for transit
to hospital.
5th February 2012. Mangerton. Rescue.
A report was received that a female walker had sustained
an ankle injury on the descent from Mangerton and was unable to
continue. She was subsequently located, treated and stretchered
from the mountain.
8th March 2012. Howth. Referral.
The Team was contacted by an individual who was trying
to organise a search for a missing woman in the Howth area. They
were advised to contact Gardaí for a list of search resources
local to that area.
14th March 2012. Corrán Tuathail. Fatality.
Gardaí contacted the Team following a report
that a walker had collapsed at the Heavenly Gates area of Corrán
Tuathail. A full callout was launched and assistance of the Shannon-based
Coast Guard helicopter was requested. The helicopter successfully
winched the casualty from his location and he was brought to Kerry
General Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. The Team
made their way to the location of the incident and assisted with
the evacuation of the large group that the casualty had been with.
17th March 2012. Hag's Glen. Assistance.
A Team landrover was dispatched to Árd na Locha after
a walker sustained a leg injury while descending from Corrán
Tuathail. She was subsequently assisted back to her car at Cronins
Yard.
22nd March 2012. Corrán Tuathail. Rescue.
The Team were contacted by Valentia Coast Guard at
17.15 following a report that two walkers were lost on Corrán
Tuathail. Contact was made with the couple who reported themselves
cold, wet and unable to ascend the mountain so that their position
could be established. A full call out was launched and a search
was undertaken of the eastern face of the mountain in dark and
extremely foggy conditions. After approximately 2 hours the couple
were located below the ridge between Corrán Tuathail and
Caher. They were given high energy food and warm clothing and
were walked off the mountain, reaching the valley floor at 23.30.
22nd March 2012. Corrán Tuathail. Assistance.
Within ten minutes of the report of the previous incident,
a second party also reported themselves lost on Corrán Tuathail.
On contacting the group it was established that they had descended
to the road on the opposite side of the mountain in Glencar. Valentia
then made arrangements to transport them back to their start point.
28th March 2012. Mangerton. Rescue.
Gardaí contacted the Team at 16.30 when a parent reported
that her adult son was long overdue from a walk in the Mangerton
area. She had spoken to him earlier when he indicated that he
had lost the path and was unsure of his position,
but unfortunately his phone battery went dead during the conversation.
A limited callout was activated as conditions were very good.
Team members who were tasked to the area spoke to walkers who
confirmed sightings of the man in the Devil's Punch Bowl and summit
areas of Mangerton. The man was subsequently located high on the
mountain at about 19.00, making very slow progress. He was escorted
safely off the hill.
